Lemon Basil Margarita
A tasty, top-shelf margarita spiced with basil and sweetened with lemon, you’ll love this twist on a margarita when you’re looking to impress your guests!
Have I mentioned that hubby and I love tequila?
In fact, it’s our only tradition we’ve consistently followed in our 10 years together: a tequila shot for special occasions (holidays, celebrations, remembrances and so on). And if you’re wondering, yes, I love me some training wheels. #givemeallthesalt
Somewhere along the way, we decided to start making our own margaritas as we feel most mixes end up masking the tequila not enhancing it. It’s also not easy to find a good mix that isn’t full of extra ingredients, a.k.a. not vegan.
We’ve never ventured beyond a traditional margarita recipe so this was fun for hubby to put together on a whim. We were working on this pesto recipe and couldn’t let the extra lemon and basil go to waste so he made a little magic happen.
I think you’re going to like it! Here’s what we (he) came up with:

Lemon Basil Margarita
A classy and sweet drink perfect for entertaining.
Ingredients
- 2 oz Anejo tequila
- 1/2 oz simple syrup
- 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1 slice lemon (for garnish)
- 3 sprigs basil - cut in half
Instructions
-
Combine tequila, simple syrup, lemon juice and 2 sprigs basil into a shaker.
-
Shake vigorously (until your guns start poppin).
-
Strain into a martini glass.
-
Garnish with lemon wheel and basil sprig.
-
Enjoy!
Recipe Notes
This margarita is best served in a chilled martini glass but still ok in an unchilled glass.
Also, if you're looking for more of the basil flavor, try muddling the lemon and basil first! In this recipe, we were looking for a visually cleaner drink so opted out of muddling.

This was our first time using basil in a drink and we were pleasantly surprised! If you’re looking for a bit of a sweeter drink, head over here and try out this Peach Bourbon Smash!
