As with any diet, it may be intimidating to get in the kitchen and start cooking some new things and let’s be real, the overwhelm continues when trying to figure which cookbook to buy. So I decided I’d put together a list of some of the best cookbooks to make your transition easier and delicious.

Let me start by saying this, don’t go on a cookbook buying frenzy… buy 1 or 2 that resonate most with your lifestyle and what you really think you’ll like to eat.

1. Fuss Free Vegan by Sam Turnbull

Sam makes cooking so easy it’s incredible. Her book is full of delicious classics that everyone loves like waffles, pretzel bites and jalapeno poppers. She also includes some menu plans using her recipes for entertaining. If you’re intimidated by cooking, check out her YouTube channel where she walks you through her recipes.

2. Forks over Knives the Cookbook by Del Sroufe

If you’re looking for just recipes, go for this recipe book. If you’re looking for a book that includes some education, go for the Forks Over Knives 4 week plan by Alona Pulde M.D. and Matthew Lederman M.D. In the book, they talk about using food as medicine and science behind whole-food, plant-based diet. They touch on how it affects chronic ailments, reaching your weight goals and mental clarity. Not to mention, the debunk the “carbs are bad” myth!

3. Vegan Casseroles by Julie Masson

If you’re looking for those comfort foods, this is your cookbook. Julie really hits home with this book touching on all the classic casseroles like shepherd’s pie, mac and cheese, and eggplant parm. Her Zucchini Basil Lasagna recipe is one we use monthly. I’ve tried it on several non-vegans and they LOVE it!

4. The Homemade Vegan Pantry: The Art of Making Your Own Staples by Miyoko Schinner

To even non-vegans, homemade bread, cheeses, and condiments can save you money and give you a sense of serious pride if you’re up for the challenge. This cookbook is full of all the staples you need including mayonnaise, parmesan cheese, pancake and biscuit mix and vanilla extract. It is so valuable to have on the shelf and most recipes even include common items that you can find at any grocery store.

5. Vegan Cooking for Carnivores by Roberto Martin

I love this book coming from the perspective of a carnivore since most of us were, at one point, a carnivore. He includes recipes for Reubens, sliders, chick’n potpie and “egg” salad.

6. Crossroads by Tal Ronnen

For the more sophisticated eaters and entertainers, this book is a must. Ronnen includes beautiful, but more advanced, plant-based recipes like Butternut Squash-puree flatbread, homemade chive pasta, and some stunning cocktails.

7. Mouthwatering Vegan by Miriam Sorrell

Sorrells recipes are just as the title says, mouthwatering. She includes recipes for all types of cuisine like curry, Moroccan pizza, stir fry and baklava.

8. Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero

If you have a sweet tooth or love bringing deserts to parties, any of these books will be amazing to keep on hand. I absolutely love their style and find their recipes very easy to use. They stem anywhere from a classic like red velvet carrot cake to more interesting like coconut lime and my favorite, pumpkin chocolate chip!

I can’t say enough how fulfilling and easy vegan cooking can be. The more you get in the kitchen, the more likely you’ll be drawn to try new things.
